Working Women Community Centre (WWCC) is honoured to have been selected as an exemplary organization among Ontario agencies providing settlement services. Citizen and Immigration Canada (CIC) selected the Working Women to present the agency’s innovative settlement service approach as a model for community engagement. The objective of the plenary session was to examine the benefits of a holistic service model and the associated implications.

The presentations continued when Working Women was selected for a visit from Mrs. Gertrude Nunoo, deputy director with ProLink, a non-profit communtiy-based agency in Ghana that works to empower disadvantaged women. The visit was coordinated by Annie Kashamura Zawadi with Canadian Crossroads International.

WWCC was also honoured to host a delegation, referred to us by the City of Toronto, from Aruba with their minister of economic affairs and culture, Michelle Hooyboer-Winklaar,and deputy council general of the Netherlands, Arie Cornelis Plieger.

Both these delegations came to learn about WWCC’s holistic approach to settlement services and specifically services and programs for women.. All were impressed with the extent the agency accomplishes despite the limited resources. “It is inspiring,” said Mrs Nunoo, ” if you can do as much as you do then there is hope for us to implement a similar structure back in Ghana.”

Mujeres Creativas is collective of immigrant and refugee women who are involved in a Working Women pilot project, which aims to pool the talents of under-resourced women in a co-op model. Each participant in the group has skills to share and while the group is mostly made up of Latin American women, all women are welcome to attend. By developing and sharing skills, the objective of this group is to build self-sufficiency and mutual support in creating handmade crafts from mostly recycled or salvaged materials.

Mujeres Creativas is open to any women interested in learning or sharing creative skills. We are always learning new artistic processes and new ideas are always welcome. If you have questions, contact us by phone or email or just drop by Working Women Community Centre at our Gladstone office any Wednesday between 3:30-6:00 to see what creative work we are up to!
