Call for On Your Mark Tutors
Today hundreds of volunteers provide urgently-needed mentoring and academic assistance to students from the Portuguese-speaking and Spanish-speaking community as part of our signature mentoring/tutoring program On Your Mark. And there’s no doubt about it – On Your Mark volunteer tutors are the single, most important reason the program succeeds.
Apply to be an On Your Mark tutor today! Tutors work with students for an hour and a half each week. As a tutor, you’ll invest in a child’s future, be a positive role model and encourage our students to stay in school.
No experience is necessary. We provide training. All you need is a love of learning and the desire to help. For more information or to complete a volunteer application, please visit our On Your Mark web page. It will be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life!
Oriole Community Garden Update
The Oriole Community Garden, also known as the Peanut Garden, is a partnership between WWCC and Advent Lutheran Church in North York, located on their site with 127 compact lots in use. This year, a group of dedicated volunteers from Celestica helped us to prepare for our annual season that began in May.
The Garden is a bustling place of gardening and non-gardening activities that include care for the plots, harvesting workshops, children and youth gardening, weekly arts and crafts for children, monthly potlucks, and an annual Harvest Celebration supported by partnerships with the Oriole Foodspace and Fairview Public Library. Over the spring and summer months, we hosted a series of Basic Gardening workshops made possible with support from Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation, and the Oriole Foodspace.
By the end of October, we will have wrapped up another successful season at our Garden of providing immigrant families with gardening skills, social interaction with fellow residents in their community, and opportunities for volunteerism and leadership in a supportive environment. Thank you to all of our Community Partners and participants for joining us!
