As Volunteer Appreciation Week comes to a close, we pause to reflect on the many ways volunteers show up — not just through the roles they hold, but through the care, presence, and leadership they bring into shared community spaces. Throughout this week, we have highlighted volunteers who facilitate conversations, create welcoming environments, support learning and well‑being, and build connection week after week. Their contributions remind us that leadership is not always loud or visible — often, it lives in consistency, listening, and a willingness to hold space for others.

At Working Women Community Centre, volunteers extend our collective capacity. They do not replace staff or programs; rather, they strengthen relationships, deepen community trust, and help create spaces where newcomer women and their families can begin the next chapter of their lives in Toronto. As we conclude this week of appreciation, we offer our deepest thanks to every volunteer who leads with care, respect, and commitment. When women thrive, their communities rise — and our volunteers play an essential role in making that possible.

Cynthia – Yoga Instructor

We are grateful to recognize Cynthia for her dedication and meaningful contributions as the Yoga Instructor for our in-person Yoga class held every Thursday at the Fairview office. Cynthia brings not only her expertise in yoga, but also deep compassion, reliability, and lived experience that resonate strongly with the women in our community. As a female immigrant herself, Cynthia has a personal understanding of the challenges, transitions, and resilience required to build a new life in Canada. This shared lived experience allows her to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive space where participants feel seen, understood, and supported. Her classes go beyond physical movement—they offer grounding, connection, and a sense of belonging. Cynthia is currently at a stage in her life where she has intentionally chosen to give back to the community with consistent presence and care. Yoga has been an important part of her own wellness journey, and she is passionate about empowering others with tools to reduce stress, build resilience, and find balance. With gratitude to Cynthia for sharing her care, steadiness, and commitment to community well‑being.

Samia Y. – Victoria Park Hub Volunteer

Samia’s volunteer work at the Working Women Community Centre at the Victoria Park hub plays an important role in creating a welcoming, supportive, and well-organized environment for women and community members. She contributes to program coordination, client support, and administrative tasks, helping daily operations run smoothly. Samia actively supports events and programs by setting up spaces, organizing materials, assisting facilitators, and ensuring activities are engaging and efficient. She also provides front-line client service by greeting visitors, answering calls, registering clients, and maintaining confidential records with professionalism and care. In addition, she helps with administrative tasks including, bookkeeping, payables, invoices, organizing folders and files. Through her dedication and attention to detail, Samia fosters an inclusive and empowering space where individuals feel respected, informed, and supported. We thank Samia for the behind‑the‑scenes leadership that helps our community spaces run with care and intention.

Pooja M. – Victoria Park Hub Volunteer

Pooja began volunteering at the Victoria Park Hub at the age of 14, where she discovered her passion for supporting youth and women in her community. After focusing on her post-secondary education, she returned in 2024 with renewed dedication, actively contributing to programs, workshops, and events such as youth initiatives, Family Day, and community outreach activities. She supports both program coordination and administrative tasks, including creating promotional materials, while also taking on a leadership role in facilitating workshops on topics like self-care, cybersecurity, and online safety. Through her strong communication skills and ability to connect with others, Pooja helps create inclusive, engaging spaces and continues to make a meaningful impact through her commitment to community service. Our sincere thanks to Pooja for her energy, leadership, and long‑standing dedication to community engagement.

Shogofan S. – Victoria Park Hub Volunteer

Shogofan has contributed to the Working Women Community Centre as both a placement student and a dedicated volunteer, demonstrating strong skills in community support, program facilitation, client service, and administration. She plays a key role in supporting programs, workshops, and events, while also taking initiative to develop and lead her own classes, including Preparation for Citizenship and English language sessions, Farsi G1 Driving Test classes at both the Hub and the Fairview location. In addition to facilitating programs, she provides front-line support by welcoming clients, assisting with registrations, and maintaining confidential records. Recognized for her meaningful contributions with a certificate of appreciation, Shogofan continues to create inclusive, supportive spaces and remains committed to empowering newcomers and strengthening her community. Thank you to Shogofan for her initiative, leadership, and ongoing commitment to supporting newcomers.

Continuing Our Volunteer Appreciation Week Spotlights

As Volunteer Appreciation Week continues, we are proud to shine a light on more of the volunteers who help strengthen programs, relationships, and community life at the Working Women Community Centre.

Volunteers support WWCC in many different ways — facilitating programs, holding space for conversation, and offering steady presence week after week. While their roles may look different, they share a strong commitment to supporting women, families, and community members with care, respect, and consistency.

Today, we continue our Volunteer Appreciation Week spotlights by recognizing additional volunteers whose contributions help create welcoming, inclusive spaces across our programs.

Jordanna K. — Evening Chatting Hour Facilitator

We would like to recognize Jordanna for her valuable contributions as the facilitator of our Evening Chatting Hour program. Although she is new to the role, Jordanna has already made a meaningful impact on participants through her warmth, organization, and genuine connection. She brings a wealth of life experience to her work. As a trained Naturopathic Doctor, she has a strong foundation in listening, empathy, and understanding individual needs.

Having stepped away from her professional practice to raise her children, Jordanna now brings those same skills — patience, care, and attentiveness — into her volunteer role as her children are older. She is highly organized, uses her time well, and deeply enjoys connecting with people.

Jordanna has a natural ability to make participants feel heard, validated, and comfortable engaging in conversation. Her ease with people, including families and individuals from diverse backgrounds, has helped create a welcoming and supportive environment within the Evening Chatting Hour program.

Maria I. — Conversation Club Facilitator

Every Tuesday, for one hour and fifteen minutes, a special kind of magic happens in our community space — Conversation Club with Maria. This welcoming and inclusive program invites participants of all ages to come together, improve their English language skills, and engage in meaningful conversations. But it is more than just a language class. Participants often describe the club as feeling like a family — a place where they can share daily experiences, laugh together, and learn from one another.

Conversation topics range from everyday life to current events, and the atmosphere is always warm, respectful, and engaging. Maria’s thoughtful facilitation ensures that everyone has a voice. Whether someone is just beginning their language journey or looking to refine their skills, they find encouragement and connection in the group.

Conversation Club continues to be a cornerstone of our community development efforts, fostering not just communication, but meaningful relationships.

Thank you, Maria, for the thoughtfulness and care you bring to creating such a welcoming and connected space.

Chak Man Cheung (Jacky) — ABC Circle Facilitator

We would like to take a moment to recognize and sincerely thank Jacky for his outstanding work as the facilitator of our ABC Circle English learning program. Jacky plays a vital role in supporting community members as they build confidence and foundational English skills in a welcoming and respectful environment. He brings a high level of inclusivity and compassion to every session.

Jacky takes the time to understand the diverse backgrounds, learning styles, and individual needs of participants, ensuring that everyone feels seen, supported, and encouraged to participate. His patience and empathy create a safe space where learners feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions, and growing at their own pace.

Through his thoughtful approach and genuine care, Jacky goes beyond teaching language skills — he helps foster confidence, connection, and belonging within the community. Thank you, Jacky, for your dedication, patience, and the positive impact you continue to have through this program.

Annabel W. — On Your Mark Volunteer Tutor

Annabel is a shining example of dedication and impact within the On Your Mark program. A retired teacher, Annabel joined the program during the 2021–2022 school year with a strong desire to continue supporting students through volunteer work, and she has now been with the program for five years. She specializes in working with students whose first language is not English, bringing creativity, patience, and warmth to every session.

Annabel is currently working with two students: a Grade 6 student from Cuba who arrived in Canada in 2023 and is now in their second year working with Annabel, and a Grade 1 student, also from Cuba, who arrived in 2024. Her engaging and thoughtful approach helps both students build confidence, and they look forward to their sessions with her each week.

Through ongoing teacher feedback, we know that Annabel’s support has made a clear difference, and that her students are flourishing both academically and personally. In one particularly powerful example, one of her students was crying every night because she could not understand English and felt isolated without friends. Through Annabel’s consistent encouragement and support, she has learned English, gained confidence, and now has friends at school.

Manjula S. — English Conversation Club (WWCC Downtown)

Every Tuesday at our WWCC Downtown location, something truly special happens — English Conversation Club with Manjula.

As a newcomer herself, Manjula brings deep empathy and understanding to others navigating their immigration journeys. Through her kindness, patience, and genuine friendship, she creates a welcoming and inclusive space where everyone feels comfortable learning and sharing.

Manjula inspires our community by showing, through her own personal journey, how navigating challenges can be made easier with the support of others. Her experience is a powerful reminder that no one has to go through it alone.

More than just improving language skills, Manjula fosters a sense of belonging. Participants come together to build confidence, create connections, and form meaningful friendships. What begins as a conversation class quickly feels like a supportive community where everyone’s voice matters.

Shreya P. — Yoga Instructor (WWCC Downtown)

Every Monday at our WWCC Downtown location, Shreya creates a welcoming and inclusive space for women — helping boost their energy, well‑being, and connection with one another. Through her classes, participants feel supported, empowered, and inspired on their wellness journeys.

Her passion for sharing yoga goes beyond teaching — it’s about giving back, fostering belonging, and empowering others on their wellness journeys.

Susan L. — Speak Up Program

We are delighted to recognize Susan, who has been a vibrant and valued part of our community since 2018, generously volunteering for several years with the Speak Up program.

IRCC Settlement Services Update for Newcomers | 2026 Changes Explained

Canada is making changes to federally funded settlement services through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). These updates are intended to support a sustainable immigration system while continuing to help newcomers settle successfully.

What’s Changing

Starting April 1, 2026 , access to IRCC‑funded settlement services will be available for up to 6 years after becoming a permanent resident .
Starting April 1, 2027 , this timeframe will change to 5 years after becoming a permanent resident .

Who Is Affected

✅ These changes apply only to economic immigrants.

❌ They do NOT apply to:

Family‑sponsored immigrants
Protected persons and refugees
Humanitarian & Compassionate (H&C) applicants

If you fall into one of the groups listed above, your access to settlement services is not changing .

Why Settlement Services Matter

IRCC‑funded settlement services help newcomers:

Find employment
Build community connections
Understand life in Canada
Access supports for long‑term success

These services are free for eligible participants .

Who May Still Be Eligible

You may still qualify for settlement services if you are:

A permanent resident (within the eligibility timeframe)

Food security is about more than access to groceries. It is about dignity, health, connection, and the ability for women and families to feel supported in their daily lives.

Today, we’re happy to share the launch of the Food Security section of our Client Portal , making it easier for community members to learn about, access, and take part in the food programs and supports available at Working Women Community Centre.

Food security means having consistent access to enough safe and nutritious food to support an active, healthy life. With rising costs and ongoing economic pressures, this can be a challenge for many women and families. Our Food Security programming offers practical supports alongside opportunities to learn, share, and connect—meeting people where they are and supporting both immediate and longer‑term needs.

The new Food Security pages bring together information about programs and activities in one easy‑to‑navigate space. Whether someone is looking for hands‑on workshops, community‑based activities, or support during a difficult time, the portal helps make options clear and accessible.

All Food Security programs and activities are free of charge , and participants are welcome to attend activities regardless of where they live. Any specific eligibility requirements are clearly outlined on the portal.

The Client Portal is designed with ease of access in mind. It provides straightforward information about how to register, who to contact, and what to expect when participating in activities. By bringing resources together in one place, the portal helps reduce barriers and supports people in finding what works best for them.

As the 2025 tax season approaches , it’s important to understand why filing an income tax return in Canada matters and what supports are available to help you through the process.

When Is the Tax Filing Deadline?

In Canada, most individuals are encouraged to file their 2025 income tax return by April 30, 2026 . Filing on time helps ensure you receive any benefits or credits you may be eligible for and avoids potential delays or penalties.

Why Should You File an Income Tax Return?

Even if you did not earn income in Canada during 2025 , filing a tax return is still important. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) uses your tax return to determine your eligibility for federal and provincial benefits and credits, including:

GST/HST Credit
Canada Child Benefit (CCB)
Other income‑tested benefits and supports

Filing your taxes helps ensure you receive the financial assistance you may be entitled to and keeps your information up to date with the CRA.

Free Community Tax Clinics

If you have a modest income and a simple tax situation , you may qualify for free tax preparation assistance through the CRA’s Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP).

Women and Allies Moving Our City Forward

Warm, spring-like weather greeted us on Saturday as women and allies from across the city came together to march for International Women’s Day. The day was a powerful reminder of why we continue to show up for one another. Marching together reminds us to be hopeful and to keep fighting for change and equal rights and justice for our sisters across the globe… Those words grounded the spirit of the day and carried through every step of the march.

As we moved through Toronto’s streets, the themes shaping International Women’s Day 2026 stayed front and centre. The campaign “Give To Gain” captures a simple but transformative idea: when we invest in women—through mentorship, shared knowledge, advocacy, resources, or time—we strengthen entire communities and create opportunities that reach far beyond any one individual.

The United Nations theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls,” pushes us to confront the legal and structural barriers that still prevent women and girls from accessing real, lived equality. It calls on all of us to ensure that rights are upheld not only in principle, but in everyday experience by challenging discriminatory laws and harmful norms.

I saw these themes echoed in the crowd—on handmade signs, in the chants that carried down the streets, and in the determination of everyone marching beside me. The energy was joyful, bold, and deeply committed, underscoring that meaningful progress comes from action, solidarity, and persistence.

For more than 50 years, Working Women Community Centre has stood alongside women and their families, building stronger and more connected communities. Walking with so many passionate advocates this weekend reaffirmed how vital that work is. When we come together—across neighbourhoods, generations, and experiences—we build the momentum needed for real and lasting change.

As Toronto’s streets filled with calls for justice and equality, one truth was unmistakable: our collective action pushes the world forward. When we give, when we show up, and when we keep marching, a more equitable future becomes not only possible, but within reach.

Uniting for a New World on Saturday March 7th

International Women’s Day is one of my favourite moments of the year. It’s when our city comes together—literally—to celebrate women, honour resilience, and push forward toward real gender equity. This year, I’m excited to invite you to walk with us at the march.

At Working Women Community Centre, we support women and their families by opening pathways to self-development and community action that enrich their quality of life. Specializing in newcomer services, our programming includes Settlement and VAW counselling, Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC), family support and education programs, food security initiatives, and community engagement programming. We envision a future where all women—regardless of social identity or immigration realities—have full inclusion, the power, and the self-determination to shape their communities.

This vision is why the International Women’s Day March is so important to us. It’s a moment where newcomers, long-time Torontonians, supporters, partners, and advocates walk side by side to show what equity in action truly looks like.

We’ll be meeting outside of the Tim Hortons, 246 Bloor Street West , on Saturday March 7th at 12:30pm . From there, we’ll head out for the march together. Bring your friends, family, neighbours, coworkers—everyone is welcome. Whether you’ve known WWCC for years or you’re just discovering our work, your presence matters. Walking together sends a clear message: newcomer women’s voices, leadership, and lives matter.

Why we march together:

To celebrate all women , whose courage and contributions make Toronto stronger every day.
To recognize that gender equity takes collective action , across communities and identities.
To stand visibly and proudly for a future where all women, regardless of status, have the power and opportunity to shape the world around them .

We’re pleased to announce a new series of in person Family Sponsorship Information Sessions at 533C Gladstone Ave (near Dufferin TTC Station). These sessions are ideal for individuals looking to understand eligibility, documentation, and timelines related to sponsoring family members to Canada.

Each session begins at 2:00 PM and provides newcomer women and their families with clear, accessible guidance on the family sponsorship process—one of the many ways we continue fulfilling our mission.

Join our Board of Directors

Passionate about making a meaningful difference in the lives of newcomer women and their families? We would love to hear from you regarding volunteer openings on the Centre’s Board of Directors! The term of the Director role is three years. Previous Board experience is not required.

The Working Women Community Centre (the “Centre”) exists to help newcomer women and their families thrive in Toronto and beyond. We are a large community organization that advocates for, empowers and supports newcomer women and their families through a full range of services ranging from education, to settlement, language, food security and beyond. By supporting women, we enable them to build their capacity so that they can be active participants and contributors in their communities. Because when women thrive, their communities rise. When communities rise, society flourishes.

We are looking for people who would like to be involved in the Centre and also actively serve on or lead our Board Finance Committee . On average, the monthly commitment is 6-hours, including a virtual Board meeting on the first Wednesday of each month.

As a Board member, you will work with the Executive Director and other Directors on strategic decision-making and oversight, monitoring performance, overseeing quality and risk management, and ensuring sustainable operations through fiscal stewardship. You will also advance program and service delivery through fundraising activities.

We are currently seeking people with an interest and expertise in the following areas:

● DEIB

● Policy development,

● Human resources management in a unionized workplace,

● Fundraising,

● Communications, and/or marketing

The Centre actively supports a culture of collaboration, diversity, equity,

inclusion and access, and welcomes applicants from the many communities it serves.

At Working Women Community Centre (WWCC), our  Settlement Program  continues to be a lifeline for newcomers, immigrants, and refugees—especially women and their families—navigating the complexities of starting life in Canada.

�� Helping Newcomers Find Their Way

Our culturally sensitive services are designed to empower clients to become confident, self-sufficient members of their new communities. This year, we provided:

One-on-one case management and needs assessments
Information and orientation sessions
Women’s support groups
Help with essential documentation and benefits

We also made  internal referrals  to WWCC programs like LINC, Food Security, HIPPY, Caregiver Support, and Community Development, and  external referrals  to housing, employment, legal aid, healthcare, and mental health services.

This year marked the  full implementation of our digital booking system , improving accessibility and reducing wait times. We also expanded internal program integration, making transitions smoother for clients across services. These changes have streamlined service delivery and helped us respond more efficiently to the evolving needs of our community.

Susana’s Journey
Arriving in Canada in 2016, Susana faced language barriers and an unfamiliar job market. With WWCC’s support, she gained permanent residency in 2021, joined our women’s support group, and launched a successful cleaning business. Today, she’s preparing to apply for citizenship and considering hiring staff—proof that with the right support, dreams can flourish.

A Story of Courage
One client, newly arrived in Canada, found herself in an abusive domestic situation. Feeling isolated, she turned to WWCC. We connected her with specialized support services, and she bravely left the abusive environment. Today, she’s rebuilding her life with hope and confidence.

On Your Mark: Opening Young Minds Through Support, Skills, and Heartfelt Impact

The  On Your Mark Tutoring and Mentoring Program  continues to be a vital source of academic support for Spanish and Portuguese-speaking children and youth in Grades 1–12. Through free tutoring and mentoring, the program helps students build academic confidence, strengthen study habits, and feel more capable in their learning journey.

But the real story of On Your Mark is told through the voices of the families and students whose lives have been touched.

“With three kids—ages 16, 13, and 8—we needed extra support in English, especially with writing. Since starting tutoring, we've seen a real improvement. They’re more confident and organized. The consistent support has made a noticeable difference.”  — J.P.

Learning That Builds Confidence

This year,  173 students participated in the program—69 Portuguese-speaking and 98 Spanish-speaking, including 50 high school students and 123 elementary students. Behind these numbers is a community of care:

200 generous volunteers
25 dedicated participant supervisors
16 York University teacher candidates

Their commitment created a nurturing and inclusive learning environment where students could thrive—not just academically, but emotionally.

Beyond Academics: Building Resilience and Belonging

This year, On Your Mark expanded its reach by introducing sports, culture, and community programming. Eleven female students participated in  Jays Care’s empowering sports initiative , attending weekly sessions that built teamwork and self-esteem. A partnership with the  Toronto Raptors clinic  gave students new opportunities to grow through play and leadership. These experiences helped students develop not just academic skills, but life skills—building resilience and a sense of belonging.

What Community Means to Us

Community is about feeling seen, heard, and valued. It’s about finding people who understand your journey and are ready to walk beside you. Through shared experiences, laughter, and learning, we help individuals build stronger relationships and a deeper sense of place.

Community Development Program – Volunteer Lead Activities

Over the last 25 years, our Community Development program has connected thousands of people and is fueled by more than 50 dedicated volunteers that ran weekly activities that brought together 1,000 people. These activities are designed to help people grow their skills, share their talents, and most importantly—connect. Because when people feel connected, they feel at home.

Moments That Matter

�� Family Fun Week 2024  was a celebration of joy, togetherness, and discovery. Over 450 clients joined us for a week of adventures—from Edwards Gardens to Riverdale Farm, Woodbine Beach, and the Royal Ontario Museum. Each day brought new experiences and lasting memories.

One youth shared,  “I didn’t even mind my mom being around—I had so much fun!”  Another declared,  “I’m coming every year until I’m old!”  These moments reflect the true spirit of Family Fun Week: joy that bridges generations and builds lasting bonds.

��️ Conversation Club with Maria  is another cornerstone of our community. Every Tuesday, participants gather not just to improve their English, but to connect. It’s a space where stories are shared, laughter is common, and everyone has a voice. Clients often describe it as feeling like family—a place where language learning becomes a gateway to friendship and belonging.

Building Belonging, One Connection at a Time

The impact of these activities goes far beyond the events themselves. They help people build stronger relationships, feel more rooted in their community, and discover a sense of belonging that lasts.

�� Empowering Young Mothers: A Year of Growth with HIPPY Toronto

In Toronto, the HIPPY (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters) Program for Young Mothers continues to be a transformative experience—helping women under 29 build the skills, confidence, and knowledge they need to support their children’s early learning and development.

Strengthening Families Through Learning

HIPPY is more than a curriculum—it’s a journey of growth. Through weekly home visits and structured learning activities, mothers of children aged 3–5 gain practical tools to foster school readiness, strengthen the parent–child bond, and become active participants in their children’s education.

The program creates a safe, supportive space where young mothers can ask questions, try new strategies, and see the impact of their efforts firsthand. As their children grow, so do they—gaining confidence not only as parents, but as leaders in their families.

 A Year of Meaningful Milestones

This past year was filled with workshops and events that supported both personal development and parenting skills. From creative art sessions to wellness workshops, each activity was designed to help mothers reflect, recharge, and grow.

At the  Holiday Celebration at Fantasy Fair , families shared joyful moments that reinforced the importance of early engagement.
The  Vision Board Workshop  encouraged mothers to set goals for themselves and their children, turning aspirations into action.
Parenting and Mental Health sessions  used art and mindfulness to promote nurturing relationships and emotional wellness.
The  Graduation Celebration  was a powerful recognition of each mother’s growth—celebrating their achievements with cultural food, entertainment, and heartfelt community support.

These experiences helped mothers build the confidence to guide their children’s learning and development with intention and care.

Real Impact, Real Growth

This year, 26 mothers completed the program, with a 96% completion rate. Many transitioned to employment or education, while continuing to apply what they learned at home. Home Visitors provided over 1,300 hours of support—helping mothers access resources, build parenting skills, and feel empowered in their role.

The program’s diversity was a strength, with participants representing 13 countries and speaking 15 languages. This rich mix of backgrounds created a learning environment where every voice mattered and every experience was valued.

One mother, Saadia, shared: “With the HIPPY program, things were different and easier. I spent more time with my children, began reading them stories, and teaching them how to play. We've become more connected.” Saadia now plans to obtain her G1 license and pursue new goals for her family—proof that when mothers feel supported and equipped, they thrive.

Looking Ahead

In 2025–2026, we aim to welcome 40–45 families, expand into new neighbourhoods, and enhance our workshops with topics like budgeting, career planning, and wellness. Our goal is simple: to continue helping young mothers build the skills and confidence they need to support their children’s development—and their own growth as parents and individuals.

�� Finding Strength in Sisterhood: A Year of Healing and Empowerment in Women’s Services

This past year, the  Women’s Services  program continued to be a vital source of support, empowerment, and education for women navigating settlement challenges in Canada. Through a wide range of services—including settlement counseling, economic development, English language instruction, and employment programs—the initiative helped women build confidence, community, and resilience.

�� A Safe Space to Heal and Grow

Weekly support groups in Portuguese, English, Spanish, Farsi, Mandarin, and Arabic created safe, culturally responsive spaces for women to share their immigration journeys, experiences of stress, and coping strategies.
Guest speakers addressed critical topics such as housing rights, immigration pathways, mental health supports, domestic violence resources, and wellness.
A family outing to the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) offered hands-on activities that encouraged creativity and self-expression.
End-of-program evaluations and participant-led reflections fostered peer-led support groups, promoting sustainability and community leadership.

Participants gained increased awareness of landlord/tenant rights, eviction processes, and housing supports. Mental health literacy and coping skills were notably strengthened, especially among Portuguese-speaking women with limited access to culturally and linguistically appropriate services. Many expressed a strong interest in continuing self-led support groups beyond the program’s formal delivery.

�� Innovations That Nurture the Whole Person

This year, the program introduced wellness and art-based activities—such as meditation, guided breathing, and collage-making—to support mental health and stress reduction. These additions reflected a commitment to holistic care, recognizing that healing involves both emotional and creative expression.

Partnerships with external agencies and professionals, including Unison Health Centre and housing/legal experts, enriched the program with specialized sessions and improved service navigation.

Empowering Newcomers: LINC Program Highlights from Fiscal 2024–25

Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada

As we wrap up another impactful year, we’re proud to share the achievements and growth of our Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program for fiscal 2024–25. Our mission is to support newcomers in building strong foundations for life in Canada—and this year, our classrooms were full of stories of resilience, learning, and transformation.

We welcomed over 1100 newcomer learners, offering instruction across a wide range of levels—from literacy to advanced English. Whether in-person or online, learners engaged in lessons tailored to real-life needs, including workplace English, community engagement, digital literacy, and citizenship preparation.

One learner captured the spirit of the program beautifully:

“Thank you to this school and my teachers
For giving me more than just English
You gave me strength.
You gave me wings.”

This reflection reminds us that LINC is more than language instruction—it’s about empowerment, confidence, and growth.

To meet the needs of learners with little or no prior schooling, we expanded our in-person literacy classes. These safe, supportive spaces help build foundational skills and confidence.

Our Care for Newcomer Children (CNC) program continues to remove barriers by offering childcare during class hours. This enables newcomer parents to pursue their language goals without the added stress of childcare responsibilities.

Thanks to support from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), we enhanced our HyFlex learning model with tools like Meeting Owl devices and other interactive technologies. Learners can now choose the format that works best for them—whether in-class or remote—without compromising the quality of instruction.

We also invested in teacher development, with ongoing training in HyFlex delivery, Portfolio-Based Language Assessment (PBLA), and digital tools. These efforts ensure our educators are equipped to deliver engaging, effective lessons in any format.

Beyond language instruction, we collaborate with local organizations to offer wrap-around support. This includes information sessions, referrals to employment and settlement services, and awareness-building initiatives that help learners navigate their new environment with confidence.

In response to IRCC’s new funding cycle and reduced budgets, we’ve embraced innovation—maximizing resources, strengthening partnerships, and finding creative ways to maintain high-quality program delivery.

Looking ahead to 2025–26, our goal remains clear: to keep LINC classrooms welcoming, diverse, and impactful. We’re committed to supporting newcomers in their journey toward full participation in Canadian society.

A Heartfelt Thank You to Aramark Canada for Supporting Students in Our On Your Mark Program

As the new school year approaches, many families face the challenge of preparing their children with the supplies they need to succeed. Thanks to the incredible generosity of Aramark Canada employees and volunteers, 80 students in our On Your Mark program will be starting the year with brand-new backpacks filled with essential school supplies.

This thoughtful donation is more than just a gift—it’s a powerful message of support and encouragement for students who are working hard to achieve their academic goals. Each backpack represents opportunity, confidence, and the belief that every child deserves the tools to thrive in the classroom.

One parent shared how much this donation meant to her family: “I really appreciate the backpacks my kids picked up a little while ago. I loved them and they helped me a lot. Now we have 5 children and the school supplies will be a huge help. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Empowering Newcomer Women and Families: A Digital Leap Forward

New Client Portal Improves Access to Services

At Working Women Community Centre (WWCC), we believe that access to information and services is a cornerstone of successful settlement for newcomer women and families. Thanks to a generous $199,200 Resilient Communities Fund grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) , we’ve taken a major step forward in making that access easier, faster, and more inclusive.

On Tuesday, we were honoured to welcome one of our former volunteers Lourdes David back as a representative of MPP Marit Stiles’ office and the Ontario Trillium Foundation to celebrate the launch of our new online Client Portal —a digital tool designed to connect newcomer women and families with the resources they need to thrive in their new communities.

“The new online client portal is a great example of innovation meeting community needs,” said Marit Stiles, MPP for Davenport. “With the generous support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Working Women Community Centre can continue to make a positive impact in the lives of newcomer women and their families.”

The two-year grant, awarded in 2023, enabled us to build a user-friendly portal that includes:

Videos to help clients understand available services
A new online calendar for easy scheduling
Streamlined access to essential resources and information

“We would never have had the resources to complete this work without the Ontario Trillium Foundation,” said Vanda Henriques, Executive Director of WWCC. “The Covid pandemic highlighted the need for us to improve our online supports, as it is now the main way people find us and connect to our services. The portal also saves us time by helping people prepare for meetings and showcasing the range of opportunities for families.”

At WWCC, we’re proud to serve over 3,000 families each year through our Gladstone location, offering settlement support, community programs, and a welcoming space for newcomers to build their futures.

Linda Dabydeen – 10 Years of Service

Linda has been a cornerstone of our volunteer team for over a decade, leading and facilitating our “ Talk and Learn ” program with empathy and cultural awareness. Her work is grounded in a deep understanding of the challenges our clients face, and she consistently builds strong, empowering relationships.

Linda’s ability to connect with individuals from all walks of life, while promoting Canadian values of openness and inclusion, has made her a trusted and inspiring presence in our community.

Susan Lieberman – 5 Years of Service

Since joining us in 2018, Susan has brought warmth, creativity, and a deep sense of inclusivity to everything she does. Through her signature “ Speak Up with Susan ” sessions, she has created a welcoming space for participants to practice English, share ideas, and build confidence.

Susan also developed a five-part IELTS preparation course specifically designed for caregivers, equipping them with essential language skills and tools for success. Her thoughtful approach and commitment to empowering others have touched the lives of many.

By offering 1-1 employment coaching supports we can effectively connect women to career counseling, job placement services, and entrepreneurship training, these programs enable women to achieve financial stability and independence.

A Morning of Inspiration with Tanya Stephenson

Yesterday our HIPPY Manager Charmaine Greenidge and I had the pleasure of meeting Tanya Stephenson, the dynamic CEO of the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre (HBNC). Nestled on the picturesque east coast of Australia, just north of Brisbane, HBNC is much like our own WWCC, offering a haven of support and services for isolated or vulnerable individuals striving for a fulfilling life.

Kicking off the work week with Tanya was truly invigorating! Currently on a sabbatical, Tanya is traveling far and wide to explore social initiatives worldwide that focus on the creation of connected, thriving communities – a theme very much at the heart of all WWCC does.

After our meeting, Charmaine and I couldn't help but feel inspired by our time with Tanya and hearing about the incredible programs HBNC have developed. It's moments like these that highlight why WWCC has always valued collaboration with diverse people, agencies, and corporate partners. We have so much to learn from one another, and I extend my heartfelt thanks to Tanya for her time and inspiration!

Celebrating Black History month with LINC daytime students .

On February 11th, 2025, we had the privilege of celebrating Black History month with our entire LINC daytime student community. This event was a testament of our commitment to inclusivity and diversity, as we offered sessions in multiple languages to ensure everyone could participate and engage meaningfully.

Our presentations were conducted in Mandarin, Farsi, Ukrainian, Arabic, English, and Spanish. This multilingual approach allowed us to reach a broad audience and ensure that the rich history and contributions of black individuals in Canada were accessible to all our students. Each session was thoughtfully prepared to highlight significant moments of black history, celebrate cultural achievements and foster a deeper understanding of the ongoing struggles and trials of black communities.

One of the standout moments was the quiz and the interactive question and answer sessions where students eagerly asked questions and shared their thoughts. The engagement from the students was truly inspiring and it was heartwarming to see such a diverse group come together to honour and learn about black history.

As we continue to celebrate and recognize the importance of Black History month, we are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where every voice is heard and valued. We look forward to more events to celebrate our diverse community and promote understanding and unity.

We are looking for people who would like to be involved in the Centre, to be a part of our People and Culture Committee and to help advance our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB). On average, the monthly commitment is 6-hours, including a virtual Board meeting on the first Wednesday of each month.

As a Board member, you will work with the Executive Director and other

Directors on strategic decision-making and oversight, monitoring

performance, overseeing quality and risk management, and ensuring

sustainable operations through fiscal stewardship. You will also advance

program and service delivery through fundraising activities.

We are currently seeking people with an interest and expertise in the following areas:

The holiday season is a time for joy, giving, and community spirit.
This year, we were thrilled to host a special raffle draw on December 3, 2024, for our LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) clients, where students from each class had the chance to win cozy pajama sets. This event was not just about the prizes, but about spreading warmth and happiness during this festive time.

Each class had several winners, and the excitement and smiles on the faces of our students were truly heartwarming. The raffle draw provided a wonderful opportunity for our clients to come together, celebrate, and feel appreciated.

Wellness Check Clinic at Fairview: A Vital Step Towards Health Awareness

On October 29, Working Women Community Centre hosted a Wellness Check Clinic at our Fairview location, providing students from all classes with free health screenings. Attendees had the opportunity to check their blood pressure and blood glucose levels, gaining valuable insights into their health.

For many newcomers, health care often takes a backseat as they focus on adjusting to a new life, from finding housing to learning a new language and managing finances. This clinic aimed to make health care more accessible, offering a convenient way for students to monitor key health metrics.

Regular health screenings are essential for early detection and prevention. Through this clinic, we empower our community to prioritize their health and take proactive steps toward well-being. Any abnormal results were followed up by a Registered Nurse Practitioner, ensuring that individuals received the necessary support, care and guidance.

The success of this initiative was made possible through our collaboration with North York Toronto Health Partners, North York General Hospital, North York Family Health Team, and VHA Home HealthCare. Together, we distributed materials on blood pressure, glucose management, and flu shot information to educate and support our participants.

We’re proud to support our community’s health journey and look forward to a healthier future for all.

Celebrating Thanksgiving with Heartfelt Donations at WWCCC

At WWCCC, we believe in the power of community and the joy of giving.
This Thanksgiving, we had the incredible opportunity to spread happiness and gratitude among our newcomer clients through a special raffle event. Thanks to the generous donations we received, we were able to raffle off over 70 Coach bags and Stewart Weitzman shoes, bringing smiles and surprises to many faces.

Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on our blessings and extend a helping hand to those around us. This year, we were overwhelmed by the kindness of our donors who contributed high-quality items that made a significant impact. The Coach bags and Stewart Weitzman shoes were not just gifts; they were symbols of welcome and appreciation for our clients who are starting new chapters in their lives.

The excitement was palpable when we went to each class for the raffle. Each ticket held the promise of a beautiful surprise, and the atmosphere was filled with anticipation. When the winners were announced, the joy and gratitude were evident. Many of our clients were thrilled and pleasantly surprised to receive such valuable gifts, which added a touch of luxury to their Thanksgiving celebrations.

The impact of these donations goes beyond the material value. For our newcomer clients, receiving these gifts was a gesture of support and encouragement. It showed them that they are valued members of our community and that we are here to support them in their journey. The smiles and heartfelt thanks we received in return were the greatest rewards.

Truth and Reconciliation with Our Daytime LINC Students

The Fairview Community Development team, recently had the privilege of hosting a meaningful and engaging presentation on Truth and Reconciliation with our daytime LINC students.

The event was a wonderful blend of education, interaction, and creativity, aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of this important topic.

To kick off the event, we organized an interactive quiz that tested our students’ knowledge about Truth and Reconciliation. The quiz was not only educational but also a lot of fun, with students eagerly participating and competing for exciting prizes.

One of the highlights of the day was the art session where students created their own orange t-shirts, feathers, and small hands. These art pieces symbolize the commitment to remembering and honoring the survivors of residential schools and the children who never returned home. The creativity and thoughtfulness displayed by our students were truly inspiring.

Throughout the presentation, we emphasized the importance of Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. We discussed the history and impact of residential schools, and the ongoing journey towards healing and understanding. Our students engaged in thoughtful discussions, reflecting on the significance of this day and how we can all contribute to reconciliation. We are incredibly proud of our students for their enthusiasm and participation. This event was a step towards building a more inclusive and respectful community, and we look forward to continuing this important conversation.

Teaching Canadian Culture Through the Terry Fox Walk: TRY LIKE TERRY

For newcomers to Canada, understanding the fabric of Canadian culture can be as important as learning the language. One of the ways we introduce our LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) learners to Canadian values is through the annual Terry Fox Walk, an event that holds a special place in Canadian hearts.

This year’s theme, TRY LIKE TERRY, invited learners to connect with the spirit of Terry Fox, whose determination and courage continue to inspire Canadians. Throughout September, our Day and Evening LINC classes discussed Terry’s story and the broader importance of volunteering and charity walks in Canadian culture.

On September 19 ^th , our evening learners came together to watch a touching video from the Terry Fox Foundation, one of our lead instructors Silva, shared a personal story about how cancer research has made strides that could have changed her own family’s experience with the disease. This was followed by a walk in the neighbourhood. This brought a powerful sense of connection between the learners and the cause.

Our daytime LINC learners/students walked on September 25 ^th to Godstone Park, where we reflected on the significance of charity walks in Canada and how they unite communities for meaningful causes.

Last year, we raised $272, and this year, thanks to the increased awareness among our learners, we raised $584 together for cancer research.

Beyond the fundraising, our learners now better understand how events like the Terry Fox Walk are woven into the cultural fabric of Canada, promoting community, hope, and generosity—values that define what it means to be Canadian.

I was truly honoured to be among a group 20 recipients of the King Charles III Coronation medal this Saturday August 30, 2024. The medal recognizes the tireless work of community builders such as two of our long-time community partners and fellow recipients, Friends of Parkway Forest Park's Ana Cuciureanu and the Willowdale Community legal clinic's Rola Hamdan.

Working Women Community Centre (WWCC) is a non-profit, community-based

immigrant and refugee women’s organization providing a wide variety of services such

as community development, settlement counselling, employment and placement

support, support groups and English Language classes. All staff of the agency is

responsible for demonstrating support and commitment to the mandate and objectives

of the Centre. Staff is expected to work in the spirit of cooperation and to actively

promote harmonious relations among staff members.

Position Description:

The focus of this position is to deliver English language instruction in the Evenings, 3

days a week, through WWCC’s holistic approach to integrating language with

settlement supports to LINC learners helping them settle and succeed in the Canadian

Society.

Program Description:

Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) is a federally funded language

and settlement program. Working Women Community Centre offers 25 full-time and

part-time LINC classes at Fairview Mall Drive including Literacy through CLB 8 and a

Citizenship Driven Course (online)

RESPONSIBILITIES

The LINC Instructor is responsible for teaching about life in Canada.

The LINC Instructor will:

• Design, implement, and instruct English as a Second Language classes in a LINC

program using the Canadian Language Benchmarks;

• Develop appropriate curriculum and materials based on student needs and/or

interests;

• Prepare, administer and assess students' progress using the PBLA (Portfolio Based

Language Assessment);

• Design modules and daily lesson plans in accordance with the Revised Canadian

Language Benchmarks (CLB) 2012 in order to effectively implement PBLA in

classes;

• Provide computer-assisted instruction using language learning software and MS

Office programs where appropriate;

• Maintain attendance records and other documentation as required;

• Promote self-learning and interactive language learning;

• Contact a supply instructor when not able to come to work;

• Attend meetings and in-house professional development;

• Co-operative and friendly with solid interpersonal skills ;

• Work independently as well as in collaboration;

• Adapt to new situations with flexibility;

• Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Active TESL ON Certification (OCELT);

• CLB Bootcamp certificate

• Active Tutela member

• Excellent verbal and written English;

• Minimum 2-3 years’ experience teaching English as a Second Language to adults

(preferred);

• Working knowledge of PBLA (preference will be given to those who have either Lead

Teacher designation for PBLA or PBLA certification of training);

• Ability to adapt teaching methodology to the needs and skill levels of individual

learners while being sensitive to and understanding of issues of concern to women,

immigrants and refugees;

• Experience in community work settings with knowledge of settlement issues being

an asset;

• Knowledge of Windows 95/98 and 2000, Microsoft Office, as well as LMS,

Avenue.ca and other e-learning platforms;

• Experience working in a multicultural environment;

• Excellent organizational and time management skills;

• Familiarity teaching in multiple levels at ranging proficiencies;

Working Women Community Centre (WWCC) is a non-profit, community-based immigrant and refugee women’s organization providing a wide variety of services such as community development, settlement counselling, employment and placement support, Educational and Parenting support groups, and English Language classes. All staff of the agency is responsible for demonstrating support and commitment to the mandate and objectives of the Centre. Staff is expected to work in the spirit of cooperation and to actively promote harmonious relations among staff members.

Position Description:
The focus of this position is to deliver the HIPPY Program Curriculum and activities to the Newcomer Community in Downtown Toronto, and to support newcomer families who have preschool children (Ages 3 to 5 years). The Site Coordinator will support the HIPPY home visitors for the site, and not only support the mothers/caregivers to prepare their children to enter school ready to succeed, but also support newcomer mothers/caregivers to overcome multiple barriers and integrate smoothly into the Canadian Society.

Program Description:

HIPPY (HOME INSTRUCTION FOR PARENTS OF PRE-SCHOOL YOUNGSTERS) maximizes, through early intervention, the educational potential of young children at risk by empowering parents to be their child’s primary educator using an easy-to-follow Curriculum that helps parents teach their children and prepare them for the demands of primary school.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Support the HIPPY site throughout the recruitment of newcomer- mothers/caregivers, assessment and enrollment;
Assist in the design and implementation of training for Home Visitors and Parents, including the development of culturally appropriate supplemental material and recommending methodology and material revisions;
Lead the Home Visitor team, specifically in regards to scheduling, training, and administration;
Hold weekly in-service training of home visitors and other staff development training;
Work with HIPPY program senior manager in program implementation, training, monitoring, regular supervision of the site, program reporting, and evaluation ;
Assist in the design and implementation of training for Home Visitors and Parents, including the development of culturally appropriate supplemental material and recommending methodology and material revisions;
Plan and coordinate monthly parent group meetings, including staff planning for group meetings;
Maintain an efficient record keeping system of program operations and participating families, including completing HIPPY forms accurately, computer data and statistical entry on the National data base (ETO), and assist in program reporting and evaluation;
Conduct initial and midyear home visits, as well as weekly home visits as needed;
Participate in all HIPPY related activities, including all staff professional development trainings;
Connect newcomer families with needed resources, making necessary referrals in a timely manner;
Represent the agency and MMC (HIPPY Canada) at conferences, presentations and various events, where appropriate;
Connect and liaise between HIPPY sites and collaborate with other programs and partner organizations, and act as a spokesperson for the local HIPPY program.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum three years of experience in working with newcomer families, particularly women (mothers and caregivers);
Strong understanding and sensitivity of the issues, challenges and barriers concerning newcomer families, particularly, newcomer mothers with preschool children;
Strong knowledge and/or understanding of early childhood education, adult education, and newcomer/settlement issues;
Strong knowledge and understanding of the HIPPY (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters) Program;
Familiarity/experience with early parenting issues is an asset;
Experience working in a multicultural environment and/or the ability to work effectively with diverse communities;
Strong knowledge of community resources and services related to newcomer communities where the program is offered;
Experience in delivering training, public presentations, public education/advocacy, facilitating group meetings, and establishing strong community partnerships;
Experience in staff coordination, administrative reporting, and site supervision;
Organizational and time management skills including the ability to multitask while maintaining high level of accuracy in data collection;
Committed to teamwork with strong people’s skills, and able to work independently;
Strong communicational skills; fluency in more than one language is an asset;
Experience in/willingness to conduct home visits in various communities;
First Aid CPR Certified;
Successful police check.

On Wednesday July 5th, Working Women Community Centre was thrilled to welcome Toronto Mayor Elect Olivia Chow for a meeting at our Victoria Park Community Hub located in the Golden Mile. The Mayor met with members of the Inclusive Local Economic Opportunity Leadership Table lead by the United Way of Greater Toronto to discuss the dynamic initiatives taken by the table members to address and provide economic employment opportunities for local residents. Today’s discussion focused on the need for more affordable housing and the efforts of how the private sector, developers and community can come together to advance the creation of increased affordable housing in the Greater Golden Mile redevelopment.

The Working Women Community Centre (the Centre) is a leader among
Toronto’s settlement agencies, and women’s organizations across Ontario. It
is also recognized nationally and internationally for its work.

Passionate about wanting to make a meaningful difference in the lives of
immigrant women, their families, and in their communities? We would love
to hear from you! Previous Board of Director experience is not required.

We are looking for people who want to be part of the Centre’s governance
team, and have the time to devote to the Director’s responsibilities. On
average, the monthly commitment is 6-hours, including a hybrid Board
meeting on the first Wednesday of each month.

As a Board member you will work with the Executive Director and other
Directors on strategic decision-making and oversight, monitoring
performance, overseeing quality and risk management, and ensuring
sustainable operations through fiscal stewardship. You will also advance
program and service delivery through fundraising activities.

We are currently seeking people with experience in the areas of:
● Policy development,
● Human resources management in a unionized workplace,
● Fundraising,
● Communications, or
● Marketing

The Centre actively supports a culture of collaboration, diversity, equity and
inclusion and welcomes applicants from the many communities it serves.
